Amazing Abalone House & Spa Paternoster – Review

Posted on by Anouschka in Latest News, Reviews, Spa Reviews, Travel Reviews

My husband and I were invited to experience the Abalone House & Spa in August 2015.

We’ve stayed and several B&B’s before in Paternoster, which we’ve always enjoyed, but this time we were looking forward to a romantic break away from the kids.

Arriving at Abalone House, we immediately felt relaxed amidst the eclectic bohemian decor and settled into our room before enjoying a glass of bubbles on the deck.

We then went for a wander around the village and popped into one of the wonderful local restaurants for a mouth watering lunch. We wanted to go for a long stroll along the beach, but as it was drizzling, we opted to enjoy the hotel facilities instead.

We’d booked a table at 7pm for dinner, but they suggested that we should come down a little earlier to see the sunset on the deck. Unfortunately the weather didn’t play along, but we still got a little taste of what one could see on a better day, and of course enjoyed our sun-downers regardless. Great wine-list for me and craft beer for hubby.

Whilst driving to Abalone House I wondered what elements needed to be in place in order for a Guest House to get a 5 Star grading. A quick google search didn’t list exactly what was required but highlighted “exceptional quality, luxury accommodation (matching best international standards). Highest standard of furnishings, flawless service, meticulous guest care.”

Based on the service and guest care, I would definitely give them a 5 star rating. From the general manager, Leigh, to the lovely gentleman at reception and our friendly waiter, Dumi, everyone was super helpful without being intrusive. Any plans could be changed or reshuffled to suit our needs.

The room, although not large, was comfortable, beautifully decorated and had every amenity one could need. It’s those extras (hair dryer, shampoo & conditioner, dstv, cd & dvd player, ipod docking station, underfloor heating & heated towel rail) that made our stay that much more enjoyable. Just pack some clothes and your toothbrush and you’re all set to go.

The guest house combines a rich layering of restored antiques with African ornaments, and signature Tretchikoff prints. We spent quiet some time savouring the different decorating styles and ‘objets d’art’ from the owners’ personal collection.

Our dinner at Reuben’s was exceptional. For starters we had calamari (the most flavoursome and tender calamari we’ve both ever tasted), and steak tartare.

For mains we had Pork Belly and T-bone Steak – both absolutely delicious.

The portions may look small but they are extraordinary and actually quite filling, so we shared a dessert – the lemon cheese cake, with mint sorbet – also super yummy.

The following morning we enjoyed the buffet breakfast & great coffee before walking across to the Healing Earth Spa for a couple’s massage. The spa is really lovely, with a beautiful salt room and the staff are super friendly & knowledgeable. Both my husband and I enjoyed our massage and agreed that their products were of exceptional quality as well.

Feeling super relaxed we took a stroll around the village & picked up a few gifts to take home. We could have enjoyed a romantic beach picnic if the weather had played along, but Leigh very kindly arranged to have our picnic packed for the road.

We’re so glad she did as the picnic was amazing! Seriously, better than any top wine farm picnic I’ve ever had. You get to enjoy some of the best flavours that Reuben’s has to offer, and even if our kids had been with us, there would have been enough food for all of us. Fish and chips, chicken wraps, beef sosaties, cured meats and cheeses and three deserts – oh and of course wine 😉

Even though we were only away for 1 night, it seriously felt like we’d rested up for a week. When things flow seamlessly, I know that I lot of work goes on behind the scenes to make it seem so easy. Great food, good wine, relaxing massage, comfortable rooms, and amazing staff, made this an unforgettable experience. Highly recommended and we’ll definitely be back.
