Ginkgo Spa at the Winchester Mansions Hotel in Sea Point

Posted on by Anouschka in Reviews, Spa Reviews

All weekend I was looking forward to my Elixir massage at Ginkgo Spa. Janine had invited me to experience this signature treatment and my back and shoulders were in serious need of some pampering after sitting behind my computer for so many hours.

Location

There are several Ginkgo Spas located in luxurious hotels in the Western Cape. Ginkgo Spa at the Winchester Mansions Hotel overlooks the spectacular Sea Point promenade. I’d been to the Winchester Mansions Hotel before, for Sunday brunch (amazing), but had not yet had the pleasure of visiting the Spa.

Welcome

For once I did manage to arrive early and upon meeting Janine I was offered a delicious cup of chai tea (I want more) and filled in the obligatory consultation form. Janine and I chatted for a little while, where after she showed me around the Spa. This is the original Ginkgo Spa (there are 4 more around the Western Cape), and although it is also the smallest, it delivers the same high standard of personal attention that one can expect from any of the Ginkgo Boutique Spas.

Facilities

There are three treatment rooms, one for waxing, one with a spa bath and the other can accommodate couples for combined treatments.

Products

The Spa uses Lilian Terry, Babor, Nimue, Mamma Mio, and even has its own, newly launched Ionic detox therapy powder which helps you detox even if you aren’t willing (or able) to stick to a ‘juice only’ diet.

Treatment and Prices

Ginkgo Spa offers the routine beauty treatments like manicures and pedicures but specialises in creating the prefect treatment to combat the effects of stress and discomforts caused by everyday life. They also offer specialised massage and body treatments as well as teen and maternity treats. You can even book out the Spa for you and your friends for an Ultimate Private Spa Party!  As with most Spas located in a hotel, the prices are on the high side but as each treatment is adapted to suit individual needs by highly experienced therapists, you won’t mind splurging a little.

The treatment

As I mentioned earlier, the Elixir Massage is their signature treatment, as it takes all massage techniques into consideration when adapting the treatment to your exact needs. With this in mind, Janine had read my consultation form carefully and asked me which areas I would like her to concentrate on. She explained that the philosophy of the spa is based on the Gingkgo Biloba, which is the most resilient of all species that can protect and guard itself against the ever harmful environment pollution that it is exposed to. Based on this phenomenon their approach tries to emulate this in treating you and your individual needs.

She started by applying the LT vascu flow to my back, and placed some hot stones on top. She explained that she would leave this on so that she could see my tensions areas i.e. where the flow was blocked would be white and the rest would be quite red.

Janine has a wealth of knowledge about the causes of stress and the importance of finding ways to distress ourselves. As I had just suffered a migraine a week prior, we discussed some probable causes as she continued to find each little bit of stress and tension in my body. Her massage pressure is just perfect, I wish that every therapist could emulate her.

Janine used the LT oils as the aromatherapy base for the massage and used a combination of Swedish, Deep Tissue, Hot Stone and Lymph Drainage massage techniques. As requested she concentrated some extra time on my tension areas and explained where my shoulder and neck tension was coming from. Janine’s technique and understanding of the body was exceptional.

Conclusion

This is truly an experience to treasure as I have never had the pleasure of enjoying all these massage techniques at once. Therapists are knowledgeable, professional and highly experienced.

Positives:

Definitely the holistic approach which adapts the treatment to your exact needs. Situated in one of the most idyllic hotels along the Atlantic coastline, the views alone are tempting enough to inspire a return visit.

Negatives:

As with most hotel based Spas, the prices can be a bit on the high side but the level of treatments does match the prices. Plus they do offer monthly specials, so keep your eyes out for those.

Exciting News:

Until September 2012, Ginkgo Spas offers Massage Mondays. Book ANY massage on a Monday at any of the Ginkgo Spa & Wellness Facilities and get your treatment for half the price. Yes 50% OFF on Mondays. Please let them know that you were referred by Pamper Me Now!
