How To Drink 2 Litres Of Water A Day

Yes, I agree that this is quite a weird headline. Duh, you just open your mouth and pour in some water, right?

Well I’ve been struggling to drink 2 litres of water every day for a few years now. Not because I don’t like water (I actually love it!) but because I always forget. Suddenly it’s ‘wine o’clock’ and I realise that I haven’t even come close to drinking all the water I need, and if I start chugging it back now, I’ll be peeing all night.

So, I decided to become serious about my water intake and start scheduling when to drink, and finally I seem to have mastered the art.

So here’s how I manage to stay hydrated every day.

First you need to choose a nice big glass for home and a great bottle for when you’re out and about. I use a consol glass bottle so that I can use it in the car and not worry about any chemicals from the plastic leaching into the water.

I start at night. Before I go to bed I place my big glass of water next to my bed. Sometimes I have a few sips during the night, but the main point is that I drink whatever is left in the glass first thing in the morning. Before my feet hit the carpet, I down this glass. Boom – 500ml down, 1,5 litres to go.

Then before I have my breakfast I have some more water. I usually add my daily dose of Vitamin C powder to this as well.

This is usually how far I got and then it would all fall apart for the rest of the day. So the best way to remember to get that water in, is to drink it before you eat. This also stops you from eating too much, as you feel pretty full after 500ml of water.

So that’s the secret, 500ml as soon as you wake up. 500ml before breakfast, 500ml before lunch, and 500ml before dinner. Sounds easy! Well, unfortunately it still doesn’t always work out like that 🙁

I’m sure you’re days are as frenetic as mine (whether’s it’s work meetings or kids school runs etc), and that you might have lunch on the run, or sometimes we skip it and eat our kids leftover lunch box in the car (yes, guilty!).  That’s where the bottle comes in. I always carry a water bottle with me, so that I can have a few sips while waiting to pick the kids up from school, or watching their swimming lessons etc etc – you get my point. I’m so used to carrying it around with me that I just never leave the house without it.

Some extra tips I’ve learnt along the way:

  1. Add lemon, pineapple, cucumber or strawberries to your water. It gives it a lovely fresh flavour without any artificial sweeteners. You even get fruit infused water bottles where you can add whatever you like to the centre of the bottle.

2. Remember that your water intake doesn’t along come from drinking water alone. You can drink tea, soup etc, and water rich fruit, which also adds to your total water tally.

3. Have a one-to-one rule when drinking alcohol. For every drink you have, have a glass of water. You’ll thank yourself the next day for this as well 😉

4. Get a bottle with a water filter. The water where I leave is absolutely fine, but if you don’t like the taste of your water, then filter it before you drink it.

I hope that this helps you to remember to hydrate everyday. Water is so good for you, for SO many reasons. Here’s an interesting video I recently watched about how much water we should drink.

Happy drinking!
