Lumenis LightSheer Duet Laser Hair Removal System

Yvette from Serayu Beauty invited me for Laser Hair Removal at her Salon.

I chose to do a ½ leg as that is the area that I would love to be hair free the most. Pre kids I had time for my monthly Spa treatments and religiously had my wax, facial and pedi, but now I’ve had to resort back to shaving in the shower, as I just can’t seem to get my act together anymore.

Serayu Beauty uses the latest Lumines Light Sheer Duet Laser – a new generation in hair removal.

Watch this short video to see the Laser in action and learn why this laser system works so well.

The 3 things that impressed me most:

  1. It uses an innovative vacuum technology which basically pulls the skin closer to the laser light – it feels like a big suction kiss and is not painful at all.
  2. The surface area of the laser is also much bigger, allowing for fewer ‘shots’ and therefore larger areas can be treated much faster.
  3. No topical anaesthetics or messy gels were needed

So here’s how it all went down.

First I had to fill in a form asking me all the relevant questions so that they would know which setting would be best to use. Yvette asked me not to shave for our first session so that she could see the colour and thickness of my hair. After checking my hair and deciding which settings she needed to use on the machine, she quickly shaved my legs and then marked sections off so that she would not repeat any areas.

As my skin type and hair colour (light skin with darker hair) is the best candidate for laser hair removal, she said that I should probably only need about +-4 sessions. Every person’s skin and hair colour is different so everyone will have a different outcome.

She took a test shot to see how I reacted and I really didn’t even feel it. Each ‘shot’ feels like a suction kiss and I was so relieved that it didn’t hurt. It took her about 15 min to do both legs and that included shaving time. It was really fast and completely pain free.

I have to wait 6-8 weeks before I can have the next treatment and I am really looking forward to the end result – no more razor cuts in the shower!

Answers to all your questions:

How does laser work?

  • The laser uses a beam of light which penetrates the skin and is absorbed by the pigment color in the hair where it is converted to heat.
  • This heat travels down the hair shaft to the hair root and destroys it so that further hair cannot grow.
  • Because hair has different growth phases and the treatment only works in the active growth phase, several treatments are necessary to achieve a lasting result.
  • The number of treatments needed will depend upon the hair density, color, skin type and treatment area, together with ethnic background and hormones.
  • Typically 5 to 8 treatments are required for light skin and possibly 8 to 10 treatments with darker skin.
  • Many lasers used for laser hair removal cannot be used in darker skin types as they burn the skin, but The LightSheer Duet, works on darker skin types as well.

Am I a candidate for laser hair removal?

The ideal candidate for laser hair removal is someone with fair skin, and darker, coarser, hair. You should avoid tanning or sunburn prior to the procedure. The most unsuccessful candidates for laser hair removal are those with red or blonde hair and darker skin tones.

How many sessions will I need?

On average, a good candidate would need between five and 8 sessions to see significant results. The number of sessions depends on various parameters, including the area of the body treated, skin color, coarseness of hair, and sex. Coarse dark hair on light skin is easiest to treat. A series of treatments should be spaced at 4–6 weeks apart for most cases.

Is laser hair removal safe?

Yes, the FDA has approved laser hair removal as a safe means of permanent hair reduction. The laser settings used are individually chosen for your skin type and hair color to minimize the risk of any significant skin reaction.

Is laser hair removal permanent?

Yes, laser hair removal is a permanent hair reduction procedure. Though, it is always possible for new hair to grow after any form of hair removal treatment. However, laser treatment is the nearest we can get to achieving excellent long-term results. Occasionally it is possible to see the re-growth of small amounts of hair over a period of time, but this is usually weaker and lighter in color and can be treated again if necessary.

A few more important things to note:

• Don’t wax at least 3 weeks before having a laser treatment, as there needs to be a hair in the hair shaft for the laser to travel down the hair shaft to the hair root and destroys it.

• Don’t suntan or use a self-tanner on your skin at least 1 month before treatment as the lighter the skin the better the laser works. And no sun exposure afterwards either as the skin is very sensitive and could lead to post treatment pigmentation.

• Don’t apply essential oils to the skin prior to treatment.
