“An oasis of serenity nestled on a lush private island at the heart of One&Only Cape Town, lies an exclusive, unparalleled Spa Retreat. Surrounded by water and lush vegetation, One&Only Spa offers tailored holistic experiences, ranging from pure relaxation to unique and signature wellness journeys. Defining personal service and quiet indulgence, the Spa embraces local African influences and combines this with contemporary design.”

When I was asked to review the One & Only Spa at the Waterfront, I was truly excited as this exclusive retreat has been on my bucket list for some time now. I can never find enough time to review every spa and product that I come across, but I definitely wasn’t going to miss out on experiencing the ‘Winter African Escape’ at the One & Only Spa.

My Treatments

I chose the Amarula Cream Back, Neck and Shoulder Massage, the ESPA Boutique Facial and the Amarula Cream Foot Massage from their ‘Winter African Escape’ package – see details at the bottom of the post.

I appreciated the fact that my therapist actually took the time to read my treatment form and discuss my needs and expectations. She then went on to tailor make the treatments to deliver on what we discussed.

An interesting experience was the ESPA Boutique Facial where my therapist asked me to smell two different products, and the one which had the stronger fragrance, was the one that my skin needed most. My skepticism was soon swept aside as the first product I ‘chose’ was for hydration, which was definitely much needed, and the second was anti-aging, again exactly what I was looking to combat.

I have to just mention that the treatment bed is by far the most comfortable I have ever experienced. Not only could my therapist adjust the height and my knee elevation electronically, the head rest was super soft and comfortable too.

My therapist used the perfect pressure (firm but never sore) and combined several different forms of massage (hot stone & swedish) to alleviate most of the tension in my neck and shoulders.

My skin responded very well to the ESPA products and I left feeling very much relaxed, hydrated and rejuvenated.

If I had time, I could have enjoyed the Relaxation Suite (with heated loungers and a health station with homemade nutritious snacks, dried fruit, smoothies and herbal teas), so I would definitely advise you to add an extra couple of hours to your stay, to truly enjoy everything on offer.

In Conclusion

Prices are, as one can expect, higher than in your every day spa, but if you take the time to enjoy the Thermal and Relaxation Suites, then you’ll definitely get a return on your investment.

The treatments were all great, but to be honest, I have had many great massages and facials in many different spas around Cape Town, and I wouldn’t expect anything less. So what makes the One & Only Spa stand out from the rest?

It’s an experience. It’s starts from the moment you drive in (the security guard greets you warmly), then you walk through the magnificent hotel (and all the staff and friendly and helpful), and then you cross the bridge to find the spa on it’s own private little island.

All the little extras add up to enhance the experience. The floor is heated in the changing room (I could have stayed there all day). The ice tea in the waiting room is delicious. And then of course you can spend the day in the steam room, the sauna, rub yourself down with crushed ice and relax in the vitality pool.

After your treatments you can enjoy some yummy snacks, and recline on one of the heated loungers in the Relaxation Room.

Perfect for a spoiling a friend on her birthday, for Mother’s Day, or to catch up with you sister.

Grab a friend and go and spend the day at the One & Only Spa while the ‘Winter African Escape’ packages are still available.

I also received a few ESPA products to try at home on recommendation from my therapist – I’ll tell you more about that in another post, but I have tried the invigorating salt scrub and it definitely left my skin feeling tingly all over.
