pHformula Skin Resurfacing

After chatting to Dr Kim Prescott from Anuyu Body and Skin, she invited me to experience the pHformula A.G.E. facial which is a range she came across in Europe.

On returning to Cape Town, she introduced this range to her Wynberg spa and I asked her why this particular product stood out for her.

Kim explained that pHformula was hitting Wow factor in London for quick and very good results, but was still very new here. It is developed in Barcelona using a new generation approach (multiple gentler fruit acids, lactic acid, lactobionic acids etc) and a high technology skin delivery system for enhanced penetration of active products.

Very importantly, they are trialled on sun-exposed skins – both in Spain and Middle East. Most of glycolic ranges are developed for use in Caucasian skins and there are big risks for inflammatory responses and hyperpigmentation – or hypopigmentation which is even harder to treat – when used during times of high sun exposure.

 Apparently the wife of the dermatologist who developed the range is reported to be South African and her mother is included in some of the before and after pictures. The products even contain concentrated rooibos extracts as a key component of the antioxidant complexes.

What is pHformula?

“pHformula includes active and effective skin resurfacing solutions for the treatment of typical signs of ageing like photo-ageing, pigment changes, dull sallow appearance, superficial and medium expression lines.

pHformula skin resurfacing is an accelerated form of exfoliation that creates changes in the skin through 3 mechanisms:

A. Stimulation of epidermal growth, through removal of the stratum corneum.

B. Destruction of specific layers of damaged skin and replacing them with healthy normalized tissue.

C. Activation of mediators of inflammation inducing production of new collagen and glycoaminoglycans in the dermis.

So what’s the difference between the pHformula Skin Resurfacing and Peeling?

“The founding blocks of the pHformula treatment system are based on the technology of regenerative medicine with the concept of creating controlled chemical skin resurfacing.

The action of controlled chemical skin resurfacing is totally different than conventional peelings. Peelings mainly cause skin exfoliation, whereas controlled resurfacing actively provokes an accelerated form of cell regeneration in the different layers of the skin, whilst trauma and superficial irritation is reduced.

Developed as a dermatological skin resurfacing system, pHformula successfully treats skin disorders such as:

* ageing

* hyper-pigmentation

* acne

* chronic redness

With continuous scientific based research, the focus always remains on the development of innovative skin resurfacing treatments. All new treatment developments are based on the latest technology in regenerative medicine and are unlike anything else that has been introduced to the professional skincare market, giving the ideal opportunity to the skin care professional in achieving the best possible results.”

What does the treatment feel like?

The treatment feels a bit like a peel but feels more ‘hot’ than prickly, and it neutralises quite quickly. Cari gave me a tiny hand held fan, which was not only cooling, but was also a nice distraction. She did two layers and each was uncomfortable for about a minute at most.

The treatment is quick and takes about 30 minutes. As it self-neutralises you don’t have to wash it off afterwards, which means no mess or fuss and no wet hair afterwards.

Afterwards, she applied loads of sunscreen, as it is recommended that extended sun exposure must be avoided, especially in the 10 days prior to the treatment.

My skin was a little bit flushed for a short while afterwards and a couple of days after the treatment, my skin flaked a bit on my forehead, which is perfectly normal.

You should have a series of treatments to reach optimal results but after just one, my dull skin was definitely more smooth and radiant.

If you can handle a couple of minutes of prickliness, then this is an amazing, no-fuss and time efficient way to get your glowing skin back.
