[Review] Aura Skincare Clinic – Parkhurst

QMS

Aura skincare is one of my go-to salons— I have my nails done there occasionally—they do a sterling job and the experience is always very pleasant. Nestled in Parkhurst, the salon is elegant and comfortable.     So, it was, of course, a no-brainer when I was offered a !QMS Medicosmetics Neo Tissudermie Treament.  The skincare line is award-winning and I have always wanted to to try a facial. Dr. Schulte, the creator of these products, combined his passion for science with his vast experience whilst working as a surgeon in the fields of trauma and cosmetic surgery, to continually evolve the effectiveness of skincare. He sees the future of skincare as being interlinked with the development of modern technologies used to transport the ingredients deep into the epidermal layer.     Glynne, the lovely owner, who also did my treatment, assured me that my skin would not “overreact” toRead More

I’m excited to have been selected as one of the bloggers to test and review the Collagen Lift Paris Red Carpet.   This is a collagen supplement that you take orally on a daily basis.   Each 10 ml ampule contains: Bioactive Collagen 5000mg Hyaluronic Acid 100mg Mediterranean Seaweed Extract Vitamin C Indications and Recommendations: Take 1 ampule a day diluted in a glass of water or juice on an empty stomach, preferably before breakfast. I put it in some water, and it tastes really nice, like a red berry juice.    Clinically Proven To: Decrease wrinkles Increase skin elasticity and moisture Restore plumpness    Initially I wasn’t sure if I was interested in testing a supplement, but after doing a little bit of research, the benefits of taking oral collagen sounded very interesting, so I quickly changed my mind.   Rubybox sent me a 2 month supply to testRead More

serra

So, the quest is always on to find the perfect skincare for my skin which is mostly dry, sensitive and generally stressed. And of course, after the age of 40 is presenting other rather distressing issues such as pigmentation and wrinkles.   Gina at Professional Skin Care Lab, my trusty salon, recommended that after my  microneedling session (see review) I needed to use the Serra range of products made by local laboratory Lamelle as these would best suit my skin and also facilitate the healing needed after the treatment.   Having previously used Lamelle’s Clarity Active Control for breakouts and been very impressed, I was keen to try out this range of products specifically deigned for sensitive skin like mine,  which also has an anti-inflammatory effect.   The Serra products have been created to maintain a functional skin barrier —essential to prevent unwanted environmental elements from penetrating into theRead More

I received these gorgeous fragranced body wash gifts from LUX to test and review, and a few extra to hand out to family and friends and find out what they think about these as well.   We received the Soft Touch and the Sheer Twilight.   Composed by one of the world’s best perfume experts, Calice Becker (Who also created Beyonce Paradise, J’adore and Tommy Girl)  Lux Soft Touch has alluring fine fragrances that inspire and empower women.   The LUX fragranced body wash lathers up well, so you only need to use a small amount.    I definitely prefer the Sheer Twilight body wash which is fragranced with pearls of black orchid and juniper oil.  The perfume claims to last up to 8 hours, and although I can’t smell it on myself, my husband did say that I smelt nice.   Have you tried either of these before? And ifRead More

[Review] Lipidol Sunscreen Oil

sunscreen_01

I was sent the latest Lipidol sunscreen oil with SPF 20 to test and review, which arrived at exactly the right time, just Summer in Cape Town.   Even though it’s an oil, which usually triggers thoughts of sunburn, rather than sun protection, this protects your skin from harmful UVA and UVB rays, while supplementing your skin’s natural oily layer at the same time.     I was happy to note that it does absorb quickly but it does still feel a bit oily if you apply a lot. So apply sparingly if you’re going to the beach for example. However, saying that, my son was rolling in the sand and I managed to wipe off most of the sand before he got into the car, so it’s probably similar to creamy sunscreens.   My skin felt really moisturized at the end of the day, and no sunburn inRead More

[Review] African Extracts Rooibos

ae-webslide_advantage-16

African Extracts Rooibos just sent me some of their  Advantage Range of products to test and review. I usually like to use products I’m sent without researching them too much at first, to get a real feel for the products without being influenced by price or other people’s opinions.     Even though I do quite a bit of research when it comes to beauty products, I’ve never studied the science behind it, so I really like to go on gut feel as well. I tend to find that some products stay at the front of the shelf and I tend to reach for them on a daily basis, while others slowly migrate to the back of the cupboard, because they lack the Wow! factor in my opinion.   My initial feeling towards the African Extracts Rooibos Advantage Range is very positive. I love that it’s a local brand,Read More

Can I Get Rid Of Pigmentation?

pigmentation

I recently received the following questions regarding pigmentation, and Dr Alek Nikolic very kindly agreed to answer them for us.    “How can I tell if my pigmentation is caused by sun damage, is hormonal, or due to ageing? “   This is a difficult question to answer over the net as ideally one would like to take an adequate history, examine the skin and the pigmented lesions, and even do a VISIA skin analysis (computerised analysis that allows us to see below the skin surface) to determine the exact cause of the pigmentation and determine the best treatment approach.   Generally speaking the following are good guidelines for determining what caused our pigmentation to occur:   Melasma: Melasma is identified as patchy and connected brown, tan, or blue-gray facial skin discolorations, usually seen in women in the reproductive years. It typically appears on the upper cheeks, upper lip, forehead, and chinRead More

Revitalift-Range

I received the L’oreal Revitalift Filler Renew Range to review and have been using them everyday for the last two weeks. The range consists of the Hyaluronic Replumping Serum, the Filler Precision Eye Cream, the Anti-Ageing Day Replumping Care and the Anti-Ageing Night Replumping Care. In reviewing these products, I must first highlight that these are OTC (Over The Counter) products, which I don’t believe should be compared to doctor prescribed cosmeceuticals.  All products retail for R284.95,  available at Clicks and Dischem.   Hyaluronic Replumping Serum “This is not a Dermalogical Filler however, it will reduce the appearance of wrinkles, and replump the look of skin contours.  This serum is 10x more concentrated with hyaluronic acid than the average L’Oreal Paris day cream” Pros: It contains hyaluronic acid, which is great for restoring moisture to your skin. I also absolutely love the innovative, fun packaging. It looks like a syringe whichRead More

Harmful ingredients to look out for in skincare products

It is well known that there are some ingredients hidden in processed food that we need to look out for. The same goes for ingredients hidden in beauty products.   South African distributor of Uber Natural Beauty, Karmen Fieldgate, offers these tips for consumers to look out for.   SKIN CARE INGREDIENTS TO LOOK OUT FOR  It is known that the skin is the body’s largest organ, and that it acts as a sponge, meaning that approximately 60% of what is put on is absorbed, affecting the health and well being of the body.   Through the application of products, we expose our skin, and body, to a large number of ingredients – many of which have not been tested for their long-term effects. Many of the products that we apply consist of ingredients that are toxic, without us even knowing.   Here is a list of ingredients to lookRead More

[Review] Skin Miles

skinmiles

I am a big believer in shopping online— mostly because I am too busy to actually hit the shops and it is very convenient. But, I had no idea that skincare uniquely chosen for my specific skin issues, could also be ordered online.   Skin Miles offers you the chance to have a “consultation” with renowned aesthetic medical practitioner, Dr Alek Nikolic and then receive your products to your home. What a novel and fantastic idea!   It’s pretty simple—I filled out on online form about my skin, my major concerns and skin challenges as well as what I was looking for in products and which products I already was using. My main concerns this winter were dehydration, anti-ageing and pigmentation and I was also very anxious about not provoking a flare-up of my rosacea, which appears mostly in times of stress but can also be aggravated by products and foods.Read More
