[Review] Aura Skincare Clinic – Parkhurst

QMS

Aura skincare is one of my go-to salons— I have my nails done there occasionally—they do a sterling job and the experience is always very pleasant. Nestled in Parkhurst, the salon is elegant and comfortable.     So, it was, of course, a no-brainer when I was offered a !QMS Medicosmetics Neo Tissudermie Treament.  The skincare line is award-winning and I have always wanted to to try a facial. Dr. Schulte, the creator of these products, combined his passion for science with his vast experience whilst working as a surgeon in the fields of trauma and cosmetic surgery, to continually evolve the effectiveness of skincare. He sees the future of skincare as being interlinked with the development of modern technologies used to transport the ingredients deep into the epidermal layer.     Glynne, the lovely owner, who also did my treatment, assured me that my skin would not “overreact” toRead More

[Review] Rain – Metamorphosis

You even get to take some goodies home afterwards

When I read about the Rain Metamorphosis treatment I was immediately drawn to the idea of shedding my Winter skin and emerging new and refreshed, ready for Summer.    I’m going to come right out and say that this was probably one of the BEST massage treatments that I have EVER had. 2 hours of pure pampering. One thing that sets Rain apart from other spas is that everything has a journey, and it’s led by the client. Sylvia, my therapist, gently guided me on a journey of the senses, starting with me choosing which products she was going to use for the exfoliation, body and head massage.     Everything was perfection. The product choices were varied and top quality. The treatment was structured in such a way to minimise the client having to turn over or move. Yes, you have to get up to shower between the exfoliationRead More

Amazing Abalone House & Spa Paternoster – Review

My husband and I were invited to experience the Abalone House & Spa in August 2015.   We’ve stayed and several B&B’s before in Paternoster, which we’ve always enjoyed, but this time we were looking forward to a romantic break away from the kids.   Arriving at Abalone House, we immediately felt relaxed amidst the eclectic bohemian decor and settled into our room before enjoying a glass of bubbles on the deck.     We then went for a wander around the village and popped into one of the wonderful local restaurants for a mouth watering lunch. We wanted to go for a long stroll along the beach, but as it was drizzling, we opted to enjoy the hotel facilities instead. We’d booked a table at 7pm for dinner, but they suggested that we should come down a little earlier to see the sunset on the deck. Unfortunately the weather didn’t play along,Read More

Bella Essenza Spa Review

We can all definitely appreciate visiting a big brand spa where we expect well trained staff and good quality products. However, there is something very convenient about your local, smaller spa where you get a more personalised experience.   So how about getting the best of both worlds?   Ulandi offers just this in her home based spa in the Northern Suburbs.  Having trained at Isa Carstens Academy, she then gained significant experience at SKIN Wellness as a thereapist and manageress, before opening  The Urban Spa in 2006.  She finally opened her home-based spa called Bella Essenza in Durbanville.   Having grown up in Durbanville, many years ago, I was keen to visit my old hood again and see what Ulandi had to offer.   I was treated to the Optiphi Class Full Age Defying Facial – 80 min – R650   I asked Ulandi why she chose Optiphi for her clients: “It isRead More

Pure Wellness Skin And Body

Sometimes, I stumble completely by accident on a salon that I otherwise would not have known about. This was the case with Purewellness who happen to be five minutes away from where I live. And boy, am I glad that I discovered them!     Tucked away on Jan Smuts Avenue, they offer all manner of beauty treatments in a comfortable space where bright and lovely owner Angie Nunes will make sure that you’re comfortable and happy.     I’d decided on a coral coloured OPI pedicure as my toes were desperately in need of some TLC—luckily I had come to the right place. My lovely therapist worked quickly and expertly to give me a stunning pedicure that I was proud to show off in my sandals. The pedi consisted of a lovely foot and leg massage too, which went a long way in relaxing me for the rest ofRead More

En Masse – Illovo

Before you read any further, know this: I am a complete massage freak. I love being massaged. In my days of lots of travel, before children, I was lucky enough to experience massages all over the world from India, Iceland and Bali to Japan, Malaysia and Thailand.   In Bangkok, there’s a place known as WatPo, a school built near the temple, for those learning massage with the masters of Thai massage. My husband and I both had massages here; mine was with a warm poultice and was amazing. There is an art to Thai massage and the practitioner has to know exactly what they are doing.   So, this was my second visit to En Masse (previously I reviewed their fabulous reflexology) and this time I went back for their Thai massage, which is really their signature treatment. Walking into the salon, I already feel the tension easing awayRead More

Nails-done

One of the best things about being a beauty blogger is that I get to discover all these wonderful new spas and salons that I might never have known about otherwise.   I’ve just come back from having a super gorgeous Gelish mani done by Candice Goldschmidt at Love It Spa at Nova Constantia.     It seems that the timing was perfect for Candice to move out on her own, after working for several high end spas, and open Love it spa on this 5* boutique hotel’s premises.   Catering for international clients in season, Candice also has a loyal local client base and I can see why.   She created a simple yet super comfortable haven of tranquillity, where you immediately feel comfortable and at home. Candice delivers top quality treatments and products and you can see she is extremely knowledgeable and passionate about what she does.    Read More

One of my favourite spas recently closed down, but luckily for us, the therapist that I’ve raved about previously (Kim Lochner) decided that it was time to open her own brand new beauty salon in town.   Alabaster Box Beauty Salon opened down at the Foreshore at the bottom of town, near the Cape Town Convention Centre.   Kim has not only brought her own professional touch to the salon, but she’s hired the best therapists that share her passion for and knowledge of all things beauty.   I was treated to an exceptional Environ facial and massage by Kelly – who pampered me for close to 3 hours with great care and absolute professionalism.   I left floating down the road, feeling so much lighter and happier than when I arrived.   There are 3 treatment rooms, and she offers all the regular spa treatments one would expect, including the Fish Therapy.   Environ isRead More

Africology Parkhurst Review

If you have meandered in Parkhurst lately then no doubt you have been past  (and smelt the aromas emanating from inside) the gorgeous new Africology store.   Yes, they sell all manner of these wonderful all-natural products (I am addicted to their Sleep Balm) but did you know that beneath the shop lie ones of the most amazing spas I have ever visited?     The kind of treatments here differs from anywhere else I have seen or been to. So, I decided, after much contemplation, to go for the Oxygen therapy facial in the hope of revitalising my complexion.       Firstly, my therapist placed an oxygen mask over my face and I simply breathed in pure oxygen for five minutes. This is to get the blood plasma flowing. She then placed her hands over my face so I could smell the uplifting eucalyptus oil. Her handsRead More

The Spa at Melrose

After

After my fantastic eye treatments at the Melrose Aesthetic Centre, I tried out the samples given to me and discovered a skin product called iS Clinical. My skin is sensitive and dry and not everything suits it, but these products were amazing! That’s why I was so happy to try out an iS Clinical facial at Melrose Spa, the sister of the clinic, and directly opposite it.     The clinic is a situated in Melrose Arch and is a tranquil but professional space. I’ve always been careful about peels on my skin and had only tried one light one once before post-pregnancy when my skin was breaking out. My therapist warned me that the type of facial I was about to have is not a pampering facial, but an active one that yields quick results. So, I was a bit nervous but was assured that it really isRead More

After chatting to Dr Kim Prescott from Anuyu Body and Skin, she invited me to experience the pHformula A.G.E. facial which is a range she came across in Europe.   On returning to Cape Town, she introduced this range to her Wynberg spa and I asked her why this particular product stood out for her.   Kim explained that pHformula was hitting Wow factor in London for quick and very good results, but was still very new here. It is developed in Barcelona using a new generation approach (multiple gentler fruit acids, lactic acid, lactobionic acids etc) and a high technology skin delivery system for enhanced penetration of active products.   Very importantly, they are trialled on sun-exposed skins – both in Spain and Middle East. Most of glycolic ranges are developed for use in Caucasian skins and there are big risks for inflammatory responses and hyperpigmentation – or hypopigmentationRead More

Sorbet Parkhurst Review

Awesome ombre effect for my hands

It seems that everywhere you look, there’s a Sorbet salon: they’re taking over the local beauty world—and for good reason!  It seems like it might be easy to find a good mani/pedi because of the proliferation of nail bars in Jozi, but it isn’t. The latest Sorbet to open is in the heart of vibey Parkhurst—and just like the others, the décor is bright, fresh and no-frills.     I love having my feet and hands done simultaneously as it really does save time. Bridget is assigned to my fingers and Happy to my toes. The pair of them are just lovely and I am very impressed with their professionalism. Bridget is the very first nail therapist to suggest some acrylic to fill in the ridges on my thumbs, which are badly damaged from years of nail and cuticle biting. Once she carefully applies it, my nails are instantlyRead More
